The American media has paid attention to the protests against Prime Minister Edi Rama, which have entered their 15th day. The demonstrations, initially launched against the tourist project linked to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump in the Sazani and Narta Lagoon areas, have gradually transformed into broader protests against the government, demanding the resignation of the prime minister.
In an interview with MS NOW on MSNBC , Rama stated that negotiations for the $1.6 billion project are continuing and denied claims of conflict of interest.
"When Jared Kushner and Ivanka came here and we started working together, it wasn't clear whether Trump would go to prison or to the White House ," Rama said, referring to the legal proceedings that Donald Trump faced before the 2024 presidential election.
According to the prime minister, talks about the investment had begun before Trump's return to the presidency and Jared Kushner was not acting on behalf of the US government.
Rama described criticism of the project as "ideological nonsense," while arguing that investors "are not coming to Albania to destroy, but to build."
"Don't come here to fight Trump. It's not your battle. Do you want to convince me that suddenly the American media, American influencers and the American world are worried about flamingos in Albania?" he declared.
The project, backed by Kushner's investment company Affinity Partners, envisions the construction of hotels, apartments and villas along the Albanian coast. Part of the development is planned in the Narta Lagoon area, while a smaller resort is planned on the uninhabited island of Sazan.
Meanwhile, Albania's Anti-Corruption Agency has launched an investigation into how the company was granted the right to develop the project in an area that previously enjoyed protected status. Critics have raised concerns about a lack of competition and transparency in the process.
Despite the objections, Rama stated that he has no intention of resigning and insisted that the investment will bring economic benefits to the country.
"An investment of this magnitude in tourism will create a lot of income for everyone," he said.
