The Supreme Court today reviews Veliaj's appeal for release from prison

The High Court is expected to review this Thursday the appeal filed by the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who requests the change of the security measure "prison arrest" to a lighter measure.

In parallel with this process, the Constitutional Court has returned another request for freedom by Veliaj to the High Court for reconsideration. The Constitutional Court has requested that the new decision argue whether the measure of imprisonment is proportional to the public function he exercises as mayor of Tirana.

The focus of the review will also be the balance between the security measure and Veliaj's right to exercise the mandate he won through voting. The Supreme Court must provide concrete arguments as to why the right to be elected and to exercise the office of mayor should not prevail, in the face of such a restrictive measure.

After returning the case to its own hands, the trial panel must also argue why alternative security measures are not considered sufficient in the specific case. This request is also based on the Supreme Court's own unifying decision of May 4, regarding the practice of arrest measures.

Erion Veliaj has been in custody since February 10, 2025. Meanwhile, SPAK has been requesting the case to go to trial for five months. The Special Prosecution Office has filed 13 charges against him, including passive corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into prison.
