A new theory from archaeologists is shaking up the world. A group of researchers from Italy and Scotland claim to have discovered a vast underground city that lies beneath the Pyramids of Giza and is thought to be larger than the surface area of the pyramids themselves.
According to foreign media reports, it is believed that the "discovery" was made thanks to sophisticated technological equipment.
A press release described the findings as 'groundbreaking' and if true could rewrite the history of ancient Egypt. The new radar technique, which was used for the study, works by combining satellite radar data with tiny vibrations from naturally occurring seismic movements to build 3D images of what lies beneath the earth's surface, without doing any physical digging.
However, some independent experts have raised serious concerns about the study. A radar expert at the University of Denver, who focuses on archaeological discoveries, told the Daily Mail that the technology cannot penetrate that deep into the ground, making the idea of an underground city 'a huge exaggeration'.
He says it is conceivable that there are small structures, such as shafts and chambers, beneath the pyramids that existed before they were built, because the site was 'special to ancient people.' According to him, the only way to confirm whether the discoveries are genuine would be through excavations.
Meanwhile, foreign media reports that the research of the group of archaeologists will continue throughout 2025, shedding light on what is "hidden" beneath the Pyramids of Giza.
