243-kilogram tuna sells for $3.3 million

A giant tuna has been sold for a record price of 510.3 million yen ($3.3 million) at an auction in the Japanese capital Tokyo.

The 243-kilogram fish was purchased by the Sushizanmai restaurant chain at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market.

The prized fish was caught in Oma, one of the best tuna fishing areas in Japan, on the northern tip of the main island of Honshu.

Japan consumes more bluefin tuna than anywhere else in the world, and the fish was highly endangered – and in some cases even threatened with extinction – for a long time, largely due to overfishing for the sushi market.

Stocks are slowly recovering thanks to stricter quotas, but are still considered threatened.

The high prices at the first auction of the year at the Toyosu fish market were part of a targeted PR campaign to kick off the new financial year.

Bid prices have recovered in recent years after a significant decline due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"The first tuna of the year brings good luck. We hope that as many people as possible will enjoy it and be empowered by it," said Kiyoshi Kimura, president of the Sushizanmai restaurant chain.

He said that "the fish will be filleted and distributed to restaurants across the country."

Local media reported that tuna will be sold to customers at the usual price, despite the record spending.
