An investigation by Italian authorities has highlighted tensions and difficulties within cocaine trafficking networks linked to the 'Ndrangheta mafia organization, following major drug seizures in Latin America and Europe.
According to Italian media outlet Corriere della Calabria, trafficker Giuseppe Grillo, considered a key figure in cocaine trafficking in northern Italy, sought the support of well-known drug broker Bartolo Bruzzaniti to secure new supplies and limit losses after the authorities' latest crackdown.
From the conversations decoded on the SKY ECC platform, investigators have reconstructed a series of communications in which Grillo, under the pseudonym "Putin", complained about the loss of a shipment of 450 kilograms of cocaine seized in Colombia.
In messages to Bruzzaniti, known as “Paris,” Grillo asked for more favorable prices and additional supplies. He also mentioned other loads of 800 and 1,100 kilograms, suggesting that the losses and lack of “goods” had created serious financial difficulties.
According to investigative documents, the situation was also aggravated by the fall in the price of cocaine on the market. Grillo attributed this to competition from Albanian groups and the San Luca e Piana clans, which, according to him, were "destroying" the market with lower-quality drugs.
In this context, Grillo asked Bruzzaniti for a supply that would allow him to face the competition. "If we manage to beat the price of these Albanians... we find two or three warehouses and you will see that we are fighting," he wrote in one of the communications cited by investigators.
The agreement between the parties, according to the prosecution, was materialized with the sale of 25 kilograms of cocaine by Bruzzaniti to Grillo, at a price of 32,500 euros per kilogram. The total value of the transaction amounted to 812,500 euros.
The payments, according to the conversations, were organized in installments. Grillo mentioned amounts of 350 thousand, 300 thousand and 100 thousand euros, while Bruzzaniti instructed his people to withdraw money in the Bianco area. In another communication, after the money was delivered, there was also confirmation: " It was delivered."
Part of the drugs, according to the investigators' reconstruction, was destined for Domenico Papalia, Grillo's partner. From the conversations it appears that Papalia would receive a little more than 17 kilograms of cocaine, delivered on January 8, 2021 by Grillo's people.
The Milanese investigations place this episode in a broader picture of international drug trafficking, where large seizures, debts and competition between criminal groups had created strong tensions within supply networks.
