A 28-year-old Albanian man has been arrested by Italian police in Bologna after robbing a bar and then getting involved in a dangerous chase with law enforcement, which ended with a vehicle collision, two injured police officers, and his capture.
According to Italian authorities, the young man entered a bar on Bentini Street in the early hours of the morning with his face covered, took the cash register money and then opened the gambling machines with a cutting tool to take the money inside them.
His movements were monitored in real time by security cameras, while a security company operator immediately notified the police. Investigators suspect that the Albanian did not act alone, as an accomplice managed to escape before the patrols arrived and remains wanted.
After the robbery, the 28-year-old fled in a stolen van, but police were able to locate him thanks to the GPS signal of items taken during the robbery. On Stendhal Street, he refused a stop order, increased speed and performed dangerous maneuvers, even entering the opposite direction of traffic.
During the escape, he hit a police vehicle, which went off the road and crashed into a pole. The two officers in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
A little later, the van driven by the Albanian also went off the road and crashed into the wall of a private company. Even after the accident, he tried to leave on foot, but was arrested after a few minutes of searching.
During the search of the vehicle, police found the equipment used to open the gambling machines, other burglary tools, the bar's cash register with 75 euros inside, and a coin changer.
Italian authorities say the 28-year-old has a criminal record for property crimes. He is accused of aggravated theft, resisting police and damaging property, and is in prison awaiting a court ruling.
