From 3.3 million passengers in 2019 to over 13 million expected in 2026, Tirana Airport is becoming the largest air hub in the Western Balkans...
Tirana International Airport is entering a phase that until a few years ago seemed impossible for Albania. Over 1.13 million passengers passed through the Rinas terminal during the month of April 2026 alone, an increase of 25 percent compared to the same period last year. The figure published by Tirana International Airport and also reflected by the Montenegrin media 'Vijesti' confirms that the Albanian airport continues its extraordinary pace of expansion.
The increase is not just statistical. It reflects the changing position of Albania on the Balkan air transport map. In April, 6,724 flights were registered, or 24 percent more than a year earlier. In the first four months of the year, the airport has processed about 3.3 million passengers and nearly 19,400 air operations. According to projections published by the airport management, the year 2026 could close with about 13.3 million passengers, placing Tirana among the busiest airports in Southeast Europe.
The phenomenon becomes even more significant when compared to the airport's recent history. In 2019, before the pandemic, Tirana recorded around 3.3 million passengers per year. In 2023, it exceeded 7.2 million. In 2024, it crossed the 10 million mark. In 2025, it reached 11.64 million passengers. Within six years, air traffic has more than tripled.
One of the most interesting indicators of this change is the list of destinations. For the first time, London has surpassed Italian cities and has become the most frequented destination from Tirana. During April alone, over 102 thousand passengers traveled between Albania and the British capital. After London, Bergamo, Rome, Brussels and Bologna are ranked. This shows that the airport no longer relies only on traditional Albanian emigration to Italy, but is attracting a much wider network of tourist, economic and business movements.
A key factor in this expansion remains the low-cost airline model. Wizz Air and Ryanair control the majority of the market at Rinas and have fundamentally changed the travel structure for Albanians. According to air market data, Wizz Air holds over half of the airport’s traffic, while Ryanair continues to expand its presence. This competition has driven down prices and significantly increased the number of passengers.
However, the record growth also brings problems that cannot be hidden behind the positive statistics. On peak days, the airport processes up to 43,000 passengers per day and around 250 aircraft movements. This has increased pressure on the terminal, control areas, baggage systems and the road infrastructure connecting the airport to Tirana and Durrës.
Another question is related to the future of the Albanian air market. Vlora Airport is expected to enter operation, while Kukes continues to remain outside the role promised to the public. The opening of Vlora may share some of the southern tourist traffic, but currently Tirana remains the absolute gateway to Albania and the main center of civil aviation in the country.
What is happening at Rinas is not simply the success of an airport. It is indicative of an economic and tourist transformation that is changing the structure of people's movement to Albania. If the current pace continues, Tirana will no longer be compared to the small airports of the region, but to the main air hubs of the Balkans.
The question that remains is whether Albania's infrastructure will be able to cope with this boom, or whether the pace of growth will outpace the country's capacity to manage it.
Key data on April 2026 traffic, number of passengers, flights and destinations have been published by 'Vijesti' and have also been confirmed by regional economic reports.
Historical data on TIA's traffic growth, from 3.3 million passengers in 2019 to over 11.6 million in 2025, is based on statistics published by the airport and air market reports.
The projection for 13.3 million passengers in 2026 and concerns over infrastructure capacities have been reported by RTSH International./ Pamphlet
