The Adriatic-Ionian Highway is not just a road project. It is part of a silent clash between the US and China for strategic control of the Western Balkans; and Albania is at the forefront of this race...

In the Western Balkans, roads are no longer built just for cars. They are built for influence, geopolitical orientation, and long-term control. The Adriatic-Ionian Highway is the clearest example of how infrastructure is becoming a strategic weapon in the rivalry between great powers.

According to Vijesti.me's analysis, this corridor is "designed for the Americans," not by chance. It creates a north-south axis along the Adriatic-Ionian coast, connecting NATO member states or EU candidates, and bypassing areas where China and Russia have invested heavily in recent years.

Against this backdrop, America sees the Adriatic-Ionian as part of the new Euro-Atlantic security and mobility architecture. It is not just about trade and tourism, but also about strategic transport, military logistics and energy, in line with NATO's needs.

On the other side of the geopolitical chessboard stands China, which for a decade has been making inroads into the Balkans through major infrastructure projects under the umbrella of the Belt and Road Initiative. The infamous Bar–Boljare highway in Montenegro, built with Chinese loans, has become a regional warning about the dangers of financial and political dependence on Beijing.

This is where the American approach differs. Unlike China, the US does not offer heavy state loans, but designs strategic corridors, leaves room for Western financing and aims to keep the region firmly anchored in the Euro-Atlantic orbit. The Adriatic-Ionian is Washington's answer to the "Chinese roads".

Albania, a key conflict zone

For Albania, this highway is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it strengthens the country's position as a reliable partner of the West, placing Tirana at the center of a strategic regional corridor.

On the other hand, the risk is clear: to simply turn into a transit territory, without real development benefits for the local economy.

Unlike Montenegro, where the debate over Chinese debt has been public and painful; in Albania, there is almost no serious discussion about the real costs, financing models, and public scrutiny of such projects. Decisions are made at the top, communication is done in propaganda language, and transparency remains minimal.

In this game between the US and China, Albania has clearly chosen the Western side. But choosing an ally is not enough. The real challenge is not to lose economic sovereignty, whether through eastern debts or through western projects that do not directly serve national development.

The Adriatic-Ionian Highway, therefore, is not just a road.

It is the next test of Albania's ability to balance geopolitical interests with the real needs of its citizens.

Because in today's Balkans, whoever controls the corridors controls the orientation of the countries. And the question remains open: will Albania use this corridor for development, or will it be used by it? / Pamphlet

    With heavy pain I have to say that Albania doesn’t exists anymore. What is gone is gone. It’s sold totally and the last will be the graves of our ancestors and parents.

      Shqiperi eshte shitur e blere disa here ne histori. Kete pune kane pasur klasat sunduese e politike ne Shqiperi. E prape se prape Shqiperia ka mbijetuar. Ndaj duroje dhimbjen se nuk eshte aq keq sa e mendon ti. Dhe po te ishe kaq patriot sa hiqesh jetoje ne vendin tend dhe komentet i beje ne gjuhen tende. Njerezit si puna jote qe sapo emigrojne harrojne shqipen jane ata qe na japin dhimbje, sepse kontribojne ne zhdukjen e identitetit shqiptar. Rri atje ku je shijo pastrimin e driveway nga bora e na i le ne tjerve hallet e Shqiperise.
