At least forty people have died in a boat that sank off the coast of Tunisia's Salakta, in the Mahdia province in the southeastern part of the country.
The news was announced by Walid Chatrbi, spokesman for the Mahdia court, on Tunisian radio Mosaïque FM, explaining that the boat was carrying migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa and that the victims included infants.
"Initial investigations indicate that there were 70 people on board the ship. Forty bodies, including infants, were recovered and 30 people were rescued. All were from Sub-Saharan African countries ," the Coast Guard reported.
The coast guard, which arrived at the scene where an improvised iron boat capsized, managed to rescue at least thirty people.
The Coast Guard spokesman added that the prosecutor's office has ordered an investigation into the tragedy, one of the most dramatic accidents in terms of the death toll of 2025.
Tunisia, whose coast is approximately 145 kilometers from Lampedusa, is a key transit country for thousands of African migrants who try to reach Europe by sea each year.
Over 55,000 irregular migrants have arrived in Italy since the beginning of the year, according to the latest data from the United Nations Refugee Agency, nearly 4,000 of whom set off from Tunisia.
