How quickly things fall apart. The deadly explosion in Gaza at the Ahli Arab hospital on the evening of October 17 killed many Palestinians who were taking shelter. Despite strong evidence that their deaths were caused by the failure of a fuel-laden Palestinian rocket, Arab countries were quick to condemn Israel.
Hezbollah, a heavily armed Lebanese militia, is moving closer to direct war with Israel. The painstakingly built bridges between Israel and its Arab neighbors are in ruins.
How fragile are the forces that try to hold things together.
Fifteen hours after the explosion, President Joe Biden landed in Israel, an old man with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Mr. Biden's diplomacy is a geopolitical moment. In addition to signaling grief and support for Israel, it brings into focus how important this crisis is to the Middle East and to America.
For the past half century, the United States has been the only country willing and able to bring any kind of order to the region. Despite the many failures of American policy there, including in Iraq and Syria, Mr. Biden and his secretary of state, Antony Blinken, have once again taken up that burden. Death and disease hang over Gaza. The poison is spreading throughout the Arab world.
They don't have much time.
The imminent danger is on that second front north of Israel. The death toll in Ahli Arab means Hezbollah and its Iranian sponsors risk losing face if they fail to avenge the loss of Palestinian lives. Hizbullah will now also have strong support in the Arab world if it attacks.
If Israel concludes that war is inevitable, it can strike first. America has tasked two aircraft carriers to prevent Hizbullah and Iran from opening a second front. If they oppose her, she must use them for a show of force.
A second risk is that Arab-Israeli relations are set back decades. Amidst Israel's unprecedented bombing, Arabs recall previous wars in which Israel struck schools and hospitals.

The Ahli Arab tragedy proves the cynical calculation that Palestinian casualties help Hamas by undermining support for Israel. The Israeli military must be seen to spare civilians, not least because it takes time to destroy the Hamas tunnels. Gaza is on the brink. Poor hygiene threatens epidemic disease. Israel has finally agreed that some aid can go to Gaza. Many more will be needed. If Egypt continues to detain refugees, Israel should go further by creating havens on its territory in the Negev, overseen by UN agencies.
It is also vital to describe what comes after the invasion. Israel must show that its war is with terrorists, not with the people of Gaza. It must promise a fresh start after the war, with a reconstruction program and a promise not to choke Gaza's economy. It must support a new Palestinian constitution and newly elected leaders. All of this would be easier under a new Israeli government elected when the war is over.
Even if Biden can convince Israel to take these steps, that leaves the most difficult question of all. How to ensure security in Gaza after Hamas? Israel cannot occupy the enclave forever.
This idea was rightly abandoned in 2005. Therefore, an international commitment is needed. Because it is not clear who would join this, Mr. Biden should start building a coalition now. The more Israel shows the Arab world that it is serious about protecting civilians and planning for tomorrow, the more likely Arab leaders will play their part.
This is a tall order.
A lot can and will go wrong. The entrenched anti-Zionism of ordinary Arabs will swallow up the will of their leaders to help. But the alternative is the corruption that fuels cleanup states like Iran and Russia. Biden is the only leader who can pull things together.
