A U.S. deal with Iran is not expected to be signed today, a senior administration official told CNN. According to the official, the details of the agreement are still being negotiated.
Iran has committed in principle to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and destroy its highly enriched uranium stockpile as part of a deal with the United States, a senior administration official said.
How exactly the stockpile will be disposed of remains to be negotiated, the official added, as does the length of a moratorium on future uranium enrichment.
Sanctions relief and the unblocking of Iranian assets will only follow if the Strait is reopened and Iran fulfills its commitments to negotiate limits on its nuclear program, the official said.
The specific dollar amount that Iran would receive as part of the deal has not yet been negotiated, the official said.
The statement comes a day after President Donald Trump said a deal between the United States and Iran was "mostly negotiated," signaling a potential momentum toward ending the months-long war. However, it is still uncertain whether the draft will become a final agreement.
