Imamoglu faces new charges, court refuses release
Ekrem Imamoglu

A Turkish court has decided to extend the detention of former Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in a “political espionage” case. Huseyin Gun, Necati Ozkan and Merdan Yanardag are also charged in the same case.

The case was heard by the 25th Serious Crimes Court in Istanbul, in a courtroom opposite the high-security Marmara Prison. The four defendants attended the hearing along with their lawyers.

The court decided to maintain the detention order for all defendants and postponed the continuation of the trial until July 6.

Imamoglu was previously dismissed from his post as mayor of Istanbul after being arrested in another investigation, related to suspicions of a "financially motivated criminal organization".

During the hearing, the prosecutor filed an interim motion and requested the continuation of the collection of evidence.

The prosecution requested the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority to submit data on IP addresses and servers used by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

The prosecutor also requested that documents be sent to the National Intelligence Service, MIT, and the Anti-Terrorism Directorate, to review security logs and access to the municipality's information systems.

According to the prosecutor's request, the goal is to verify whether there have been unauthorized access, data leaks, or breaches of accounts linked to the municipality's email and digital infrastructure.

The prosecutor argued that there is sufficient evidence to suspect criminal offenses, that the investigation has not been completed, and that the mildest restrictive measures are not sufficient at this stage.

The indictment drafted by the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office states that the suspected crimes were committed during the period 2019-2025.

According to the indictment, data belonging to the Istanbul Municipality database and containing personal information of citizens were found on the digital devices seized from Huseyin Gun.

The prosecution claims that this data was obtained through Necati Ozkan. According to the indictment, Ozkan is suspected of having, on Imamoglu's orders, transferred the municipality's email addresses and passwords to an online platform called "Ostin", considered part of the "dark web".
