Donald Trump arrived in Beijing for a high-profile two-day visit, where he will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, at a time when relations between the two superpowers are going through one of the most tense periods in recent years. The visit comes against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran standoff, technological rivalry and growing uncertainty in global markets.
The US president arrived in the Chinese capital shortly before 8:00 p.m. local time, accompanied by his delegation. Before descending the stairs of the plane, Trump saluted with a raised fist, while the reception was organized with special ceremony and high protocol, an element traditionally appreciated by the US president.
He was greeted at the airport by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, who is widely considered Xi Jinping's envoy for diplomatic activities and who attended Trump's inauguration as president last year. Also present were senior Chinese and American officials.
Among them were US Ambassador to China David Perdue, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng and China's Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu. Following the US president, his son Eric Trump, daughter-in-law Lara Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also walked the red carpet.
Three hundred Chinese children dressed in blue and white uniforms waved American and Chinese flags as Trump descended the steps of Air Force One.

Donald Trump's official reception by Xi Jinping is scheduled for Thursday morning local time in China.
Talks between the two leaders are expected to focus on US-China trade relations, technological rivalry, the Taiwan issue and the war with Iran, which is affecting global energy markets and security balances in Asia and the Middle East.
Trump is also expected to encourage Xi to push China's ally Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for oil trade, and to agree to a peace deal.
