A serious incident has shaken Cyprus, where two children, aged 8 and 10, were found lifeless inside a closed vehicle. It is suspected that they had been left sleeping in the car, while the high temperatures proved fatal.

According to local media, the victims were two brothers of Bulgarian origin, aged 8 and 10, members of the same family. They were discovered inside a car parked at the British military base of Dhekelia.

Base police and emergency teams immediately arrived at the scene, but were unable to save the children's lives.

Following the incident, their father and stepmother were arrested on suspicion of negligence. British authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway in relation to a flat in Xylophagou, in the Famagusta district, to fully elucidate the circumstances of the tragedy.

According to preliminary suspicions, the children were asked to sleep in the vehicle, where they died as a result of extreme temperatures and lack of air. The official cause of death will only be determined after the completion of the autopsy.

The Cyprus Mail newspaper reported that the bodies of the two children had signs of heat-related burns. Meanwhile, other local media reported that the vehicle was locked and parked near a field, near a residential area, the Daily Mail writes.

The tragedy in Cyprus comes at a time when Europe is facing a severe heatwave, which has also caused casualties in other countries.

In France, four children had died as a result of record temperatures as of Friday. Among them was an 18-month-old baby found lifeless in a car after his parents allegedly forgot him on the way to work.

A three-year-old boy was also found dead in a vehicle on the outskirts of Paris, where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, in the south of France, two brothers aged four and two died after suffering cardiac arrest in a car parked outside their grandmother's apartment.

French authorities have said the heatwave has caused around 1,000 additional deaths, mainly among people over 65 and those with underlying health conditions. Hospitals in France and Britain are reporting a sharp increase in emergency cases and admissions, with hospital capacity nearing its limit.
