US Vice President JD Vance said that any effort to reach a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia must aim to immediately stop the violence and guarantee Ukrainian sovereignty.
Vance stressed that a possible agreement must be "acceptable to both sides" and create the conditions for the conflict, which has been ongoing since February 2022, to not start again.
He distanced himself from those approaches that see financial and military aid as the only solution for Ukraine's victory.
The vice president said that unidentified political leaders and diplomats have "fantasies" and questioned the idea of "more money, more weapons or more sanctions."
Vance stressed that these will not bring a quick victory for Ukraine. He added that peace will not be achieved by "failed diplomats or politicians living in a fantasy world."
Vance's statements come at a time when the US administration is facing great pressure to clarify its strategy towards the war and the role the US should play in international efforts for a diplomatic solution.
