Police are investigating the murder of 78-year-old Gëzim Vija, who was found dead in his apartment in Korça. The body was discovered on Thursday morning by a postal worker who distributes pensions. After receiving no response from the elderly man, he notified neighbors and then the door of the house was opened, where the victim was found in one of the rooms.
The forensic examination found a deep wound to the head, caused by a sharp instrument, which led to his death. Investigators suspect that the perpetrator and the victim had fought before the fatal blow.
The police have questioned family members and relatives, but so far the evidence has not helped identify the perpetrator. The area is described as peaceful and without a history of conflict.
The victim's neighbor, Simon Muço, stated that Gëzim had no conflicts with anyone and also added that he got along very well with his sons.
"Gezim was a very good man, he was honored, respected by all people, nothing would ever come to his head. I live abroad, when I came here they told me about Gezim. We were surprised...
When he left, he respected us; with children, women, men he was very respected. I don't know how this happened, there were no conflicts with anyone; we left the doors and cars open, it's a quiet neighborhood.
It was the best in the whole neighborhood. I live outside, I just arrived the day before yesterday; when I found out, I didn't like it.
There were no conflicts with anyone; he got along very well with the boys. They even cut off one of his lights.
"He was retired, while his son came to work here as a mechanic; he came every evening, working on washing machines and refrigerators," says the neighbor.
Investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances of the incident and identify the perpetrator.
