"Medicine, the profession of a doctor, is not just a craft; it is a way of thinking that you take with you everywhere. It teaches you to listen and research carefully, to look for the cause beyond the symptom and not to forget that behind every diagnosis lies a human story." This is what President Bajram Begaj said, as he greeted the XXII National Conference of Gastro-Entero-Hepatology today.
Invited to this event by the Albanian Association of Gastro-Entero-Hepatology, Begaj, a doctor by profession, emphasized the importance of the doctor in society, highlighting humanism, professionalism, integrity and sacrifice.
The Head of State focused on the importance of the relationship between doctor and patient, describing the doctor's humane role and his responsibility in the face of technological transformations as irreplaceable.
President Begaj conveyed the message of increasing trust in the patient-doctor relationship and in medical treatment, so that in our clinics and hospitals, patients can feel that science and humanism walk side by side.
"This conference is clear evidence that Albanian medicine is on the move, developing, updating and challenging itself. Discussions on innovations in diagnostics, treatment, clinical experiences and scientific research are not just an exchange of information, but a direct investment in the health and quality of life of citizens", declared President Begaj.
He also expressed gratitude for such discussion platforms that contribute to the advancement of Albanian medicine.
"The XXII National Conference of Gastro-Entero-Hepatology is not just another scientific meeting; it is the place where the mind, experience and passion of Albanian medicine come together," praised President Begaj.
According to him, the health system does not stand on buildings, but on your professionalism, integrity and sacrifice. He added that the challenges facing medicine today, including artificial intelligence.
"Technology helps, artificial intelligence guides. But the decision is made by the doctor. Because medicine is not just science; it is judgment and responsibility, it is ethics and human relationships. Within a few seconds, artificial intelligence can analyze thousands of endoscopic images, but it cannot feel the handshake of a patient who is afraid of the diagnosis," said President Begaj, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the patient-doctor relationship, which should not be violated by these developments.
In conclusion, in a philosophical reflection on the challenges of medicine between science and humanism, President Begaj referred to Picasso's work "Science and Charity":
“The conference poster is somewhat reminiscent of Picasso’s paintings. While researching, I saw that, despite the fact that more than a century has passed, his work ‘Science and Charity’ can still offer us important reflections on medical practice, its connection with socio-cultural standards, as well as on some of the current and future challenges of medicine.”
