A NATO strategic drone, type "Northrop Grumman RQ-4D Phoenix", has carried out an extensive flight over the Balkans, also passing over Albanian territory, during a surveillance mission in the Black Sea region.
According to data published by air monitoring platforms, the unmanned aircraft with the operational code "MAGMA11" took off from Sigonella air base in Italy and conducted surveillance operations along NATO's eastern flank.
During the flight, the drone activated code 7600, the international standard signal indicating problems in radio communications, while over North Macedonian airspace. However, the vehicle continued its route towards the Black Sea before the mission was aborted and the aircraft returned to Sicily.
The flight map shows that the RQ-4D passed over Albania on the return phase, using the Western Balkans air corridor, an area that NATO considers strategic for regional monitoring and security.
The drone's orbit over North Macedonia has particularly attracted attention. According to the specialized platform "Itamilradar", the aircraft's positioning enabled extensive coverage of Kosovo and southern Serbia through advanced detection and surveillance systems.
According to the same source, such a trajectory is not considered accidental, given the strategic importance that NATO attaches to stability in the Western Balkans.
Albania, as a member state of the Alliance, remains part of NATO's main operational and logistical corridors in the Mediterranean and the Balkans. The drone flight over Albanian territory confirms the importance of Albanian airspace in the Alliance's monitoring operations.
The RQ-4D Phoenix is one of NATO's most modern strategic surveillance platforms. The aircraft can operate for more than 30 hours at very high altitudes and is used to collect real-time information on military activities and security developments in sensitive regions. /Pamphlet
