Bad weather has caused significant damage to crops, infrastructure, housing, and orchards in the Korça region as well.
One of the most affected is the rural area of Pogradec, and especially the part where the river flows through the village of Vërdova. Its rapid flow from the floods has also caused problems on the ring road.
Residents describe the difficulties they face, the damage and the dangers. One of them, Ferit Hafëzi, said that the water is flowing past his apartment and has damaged the sewers and the wall. He explains that he cannot pass because of the stream created and the damage suffered.
Even though he has installed planks in the form of a bridge, the danger remains. This is also because he has a sick, crippled family member (with one leg) who cannot move due to problems and needs he may have.
"Look, there was a bridge here, but the water has washed it away, it has destroyed it. I have a sick person inside, he has no legs, I support him with 100 thousand lek, he only gets economic assistance, that's all he gets. He wants water, but there is no water. Now we have nowhere to go, I am trapped, only with planks. He can't get out, he needs it, he has his own problems. The only way to get across is with a plank," explains Ferit Hafëzi.
Asked if the Emergency Services have taken measures in the area to resolve the problem, the resident explains that even though they came, they were unable to do anything, and even cut off the power for safety reasons, after the cables came out.
"Emergency forces came here since yesterday but could not do anything. They even cut the water and electricity pipes for safety reasons because they have come out open here from the raging waters, they have been damaged. The river has destroyed not only the bridge, but also the entire road and even overflowed its bed. The floodgates came and prevented it. Inside we have major material damage from the flood. People were up all night because they had nothing to do. This is the second time it has happened to us, they are releasing water from above at certain moments. It happened a year ago too, the main cause is the opening of the reservoir", said the resident.
He also recounts the dramatic moments of the flood in the village: "Water came in, it caused damage. I even took the sick person because he was on the first floor and brought him up to the second floor because the water came in. They turned the lights back on today, because they cut them off yesterday for safety reasons, and the water is coming in too."
