Former Interior Minister Dritan Demiraj has stated that the US Embassy's warning "must be taken very seriously not only by the security, defense, and intelligence institutions of the Republic of Albania, but also by the prime minister and the government."
"Undoubtedly, it is a very important development that reflects a long, continuous and consistent work of American intelligence agencies that monitor in Albania, in the Balkans, in Europe, all risks and threats. Consequently, such a warning, I think, should be taken very seriously not only by the security, defense, and intelligence institutions of the Republic of Albania, but by the Prime Minister and the government of the Republic of Albania."
"I think this is a warning that reflects a concrete assessment related to the activities of intelligence agencies, but in particular to individuals or specific groups connected or influenced by this conflict, who incomprehensibly and irresponsibly cheer for Iran. Meanwhile, we have a strategic ally who has been supporting the Albanian nation throughout its history. Of course, this conflict may not be perfect in all its aspects, but I think there are three main points on which Albanian institutions and citizens should focus: Increasing citizen vigilance, strengthening security measures by the agencies responsible for these operations, and increasing inter-institutional coordination with allies at the highest levels ," Colonel Demiraj said on A2CNN.
"The possibility that some Albanian individuals have connections to proxy groups or foreign agencies cannot be ruled out," Demiraj added.
In his view, Demiraj emphasized that assessing threats requires in-depth analysis and accurate information from local intelligence and international partners, while the spread of hate speech on social networks remains a concern.
"Without a doubt, the accurate and professional assessment of risks and threats requires first a detailed analysis, a professional analysis of the facts and then, based on intelligence information collected within the country, but also provided by international partners, appropriate measures are taken. What is worth emphasizing in this specific case is that a large part of it is done through social media, expressing hatred towards a considerable number of Albanian citizens, who intentionally or unintentionally, sponsored or unsponsored, may, among other things, have connections with proxy groups or groups or agencies that may be connected."
He mentioned the activities of structures linked to Iran and previous attempted attacks, which he said were prevented thanks to cooperation with allies.
"And if we return to the activities of the Alkuts forces or the Moris Ministry of Intelligence over the last four decades, their activity has been very aggressive, particularly in Western Europe, and therefore including an event during the Albania-Israel war where there were attempts to carry out terrorist attacks, but Albania and Kosovo, under the guidance of American agencies, were able to predict and prevent these attacks."
He also expressed skepticism about the role that Donald Trump may have in resolving global conflicts, emphasizing that US strategies have encountered difficulties and have not yielded the expected results.
