Israeli authorities have arrested an Albanian who was part of the humanitarian flotilla ' Sumud ' which was heading to donate aid to Gaza. Albanian activist, Baki Goxhaj, is reported to have been arrested in international waters.
Regarding the case, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it is aware of it and that the matter is being followed up through diplomatic channels to obtain full information on the circumstances and to guarantee his full rights.
"The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has been made aware of the case of Albanian citizen Baki Goxhaj, who is on board the "Sumud" flotilla. Through diplomatic channels, the Ministry has been in communication from the first moment with the competent Israeli authorities to provide full information on the situation and to guarantee respect for the rights of the Albanian citizen, including consular access, in accordance with international practices and conventions.
"The Ministry is following the matter with full priority and remains in constant contact with Mr. Goxhaj's family, and will provide further information on the further procedures that are expected to be undertaken ," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
What is the Sumud Global Flotilla that the Albanian activist was traveling with?
The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international civil initiative, organized by coalitions such as the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Movement to Gaza, the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and the Sumud Nusantara. Its main goal is to break the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza, deliver humanitarian aid (food, medicine, baby formula), and draw global attention to the situation in Gaza.
The name “Sumud” comes from the Arabic word meaning “steadfastness” or “unwavering resistance.” The flotilla includes dozens of ships, hundreds of activists from dozens of countries, and coordinated ground operations. It has had important missions in 2025 and 2026, but the ships have been frequently intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters.
