The Security Academy has changed the way it provides food to its trainees, following two cases of mass poisoning recorded within a month. The institution no longer uses the catering service from 'SORI-AL', but meals are now prepared in the Academy's canteen.
Sources indicate that the change came into effect on June 27, with the aim of avoiding a repeat of the incidents that rocked the institution. In addition to the return of cooking to the canteen premises, it has also been reorganized, the kitchen staff has been increased and the menu offered to students has been expanded.
According to sources, students who attend the Academy say that the food is fresher, while the meals are more diverse compared to the period when the service was provided by the catering company.
The decision comes after two consecutive episodes of suspected food poisoning. In total, 116 students showed symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever and headache, being transported for medical assistance to the QSUT. An investigation group was set up after the cases, while the National Food Authority took food samples for laboratory analysis.
The first case was registered in May, when dozens of trainees ended up in the hospital. Laboratory analyses identified a non-conforming food sample, where the presence of Escherichia coli and coagulase-positive staphylococcus bacteria above the norm was found in ready-made pasta. Following this finding, the AKU temporarily suspended the activity of the company "SORI-AL", which provided catering services for the Security Academy, but in a second decision the catering continued its activity.
Just a few weeks later, a second incident affected over 60 more trainees. In this case too, the AKU carried out immediate checks, took 14 food samples for analysis and initiated verifications to determine the cause of the incident.
