The leader of the “Albania Becomes” movement, Adriatik Lapaj, announced today that he will support independent candidate Florjan Binaj for the Municipality of Tirana. The hasty declaration implies that Lapaj has refused to wait and negotiate with the Democratic Party and the Opportunity Party to negotiate for a single opposition candidate.
For months, “Mundësia” had proposed an agreement in principle with the DP and all opposition parties aimed precisely at uniting opposition forces around a single, non-partisan candidate to maximize their chances in Tirana. The DP had agreed to enter into these negotiations on this basis.
But instead of this coordination, Lapaj declared today that "Albania Becomes" has decided to support Binaj, arguing the decision as an expression of "good will" and the conviction that "Albania is worth more than the party."
We recall that Adriatik Lapaj and Florian Binaj are co-founders of “Albania Becomes”. They announced the party in “Opinion” together with Edlira Çepan (photo above). After a few months, Binaj said that he would withdraw from this party. Apparently, the former co-founders have found their language again.
After Arlind Qori and the "Together Movement", this stance places Lapaj outside the framework of opposition cooperation.
Adriatik Lapaj's post:
Two days ago we proposed that candidates for municipalities in these elections, due to the extraordinary situation, should come from the ranks of engaged citizens and not from political party agreements.
We declared that we would support one of the independent candidates who would announce their candidacy in these elections.
Expressing appreciation for all those who have declared, the leadership of the "Albania Becomes" Movement has decided to support independent candidate Florjan Binaj in the Tirana Municipality.
This decision is based on our goodwill and the conviction that Albania is worth more than the party.
