A 20-year-old man managed to escape on Friday from a prison near Lyon, in southern France, by hiding inside the bag of a fellow inmate who had just finished his sentence and been released, various sources announced on Saturday.
In a statement to AFP, the penitentiary service administration announced that the young man was serving a "prison sentence."
"He took advantage of the moment of his co-convict's release to hide in his luggage and escape from prison," the statement added, confirming a report broadcast by the BFMTV television network.
The Lyon prosecutor's office, which has launched investigations into "organized escape" and "criminal group", announced that the young man is suspected of having "links to organized crime".
An internal investigation is also being conducted to "shed full light" on the circumstances of this escape. Law enforcement and the police were notified "immediately" of the incident, according to the penitentiary service, which promises to take "the necessary disciplinary measures."
