Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is facing the most difficult election of his 16 years in power, while United States President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement are mobilizing to help him.
Polls show the Hungarian leader currently trailing his former ally-turned-rival, Peter Magyar, who has capitalized on voter discontent over record inflation, economic weakness and a series of political scandals. With Orban’s dominance suddenly in doubt, the Trump administration and leading MAGA figures have sought to bolster the position of the man they consider their most reliable ideological ally in Europe.
For leading MAGA figures, Orban is not just a partner, he is a source of inspiration. His tough stance on migration, clashes with “woke” universities and cultural institutions, hostility to Brussels, and skepticism about Ukraine have long been held up by American conservatives as a model for governance.
“We were Trump before Trump,” the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) website in Budapest says. In June 2024, US Vice President JD Vance also paid tribute to Orbán, saying the Hungarian prime minister had “made smart decisions that we in the US can learn from.”
And, according to Orbán himself, this is already happening. “We have entered the policy-making system of the Trump team. We are deeply involved there,” he declared at a rally in Hungary during the 2024 White House race. The Hungarian government and its think tanks, such as the Századvég Foundation and the Danube Institute, have also had ongoing relations with Trump-linked American organizations, such as the Heritage Foundation, exchanging research, ideas, and scholars.
Above all, the US president's allies praise Orbán not only for his policies but also for his consistency, in contrast to other politicians close to MAGA, such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whom they criticize for her support for Ukraine and for her willingness to cooperate with former President Joe Biden between Trump's two terms.
“Orban did everything to remain loyal to Donald Trump even when he was out of power and considered politically finished,” said Benjamin Harnwell, a close associate of former Trump strategist Steve Bannon.

He added that the developments are not exactly what he had recommended, but that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss serious measures to "stabilize the state of the world" when Trump visits Beijing later this month.
However, it remains unclear how much MAGA support has actually helped the Hungarian prime minister. According to Timothy Ash of Chatham House, there is no evidence that Rubio's visit has changed the polls. On the contrary, a poll released after the visit showed that the center-right opposition had extended its lead in February.
While Orban has tried to present the election as a referendum on the war in Ukraine and portray his rival as a figure controlled by Brussels, Peter Magyar has managed to shift the debate to everyday economic issues.
His Tisza party currently has a 9-point lead over Orban's Fidesz party, according to Politico Poll of Polls estimates, channeling public discontent over inflation and economic management.
The Hungarian forint, traditionally vulnerable to external shocks, has come under renewed pressure amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. This has heightened fears of higher energy prices and a renewed rise in inflation, just as the pace of price increases had begun to slow.
Analysts are also divided on the impact that further MAGA support, or even a visit by Trump, could have on the election outcome.
"I think this will mobilize his supporters and strengthen his existing voter base. Whether it will change the minds of others or convince people to vote differently remains an open question," Furedi said.
Trump doesn’t usually invest political capital in causes he considers to be lost. So if the polls in Hungary continue to show Orbán losing and he fails to regain momentum in the final stages of the campaign, the Hungarian prime minister may find that there are limits to how far, and for how long, the US president is willing to go, even for one of MAGA’s most valued international allies. /Adapted from Politico /
