Oleksandr Usyk has once again been crowned the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, as he defeated Daniel Dubois in the fifth round, after a performance that was both clinical and brutal.
At the age of 38, Usyk defeated his British rival, who is 11 years his junior, to definitively establish himself as the best heavyweight boxer, so far, of the 21st century.
The finish was as decisive as it was devastating. A sharp combination created an opportunity for Usyk's hard right, as Dubois fell to the platform, though bravely, he got to his feet. But the result was decided, Usyk closing in like a shark. A left hit Dubois' head, who fell heavily to the platform.
The referee began the count, but before he could even reach 10, a white towel waved from Dubois' corner. But the knockout was complete and the culmination of another masterclass from Usyk, who, in just his eighth fight as a heavyweight, sealed his dominance in boxing's premier division.
Usyk has reclaimed the IBF title, which boxing politics had stripped from him and given to Dubois last year. The largely meaningless gift joins the WBA, WBC and WBO titles that Usyk already holds and restores his status as the unanimous king of the heavyweight division, a position he first achieved 14 months ago when he defeated Tyson Fury. Dubois joins Fury and Anthony Joshua, who have suffered consecutive losses to the Ukrainian magician.
