Dragan Stojkovic has gone down in Serbian football history for the way he was forced to resign practically in the middle of a match against Albania. The chants against him as the Rossoneri led the match in Leskovac caused the famous former footballer to stand up and greet the fans, only to sit on the bench, entrusting the leadership of the team to his assistant in the final minutes.
"Pix" then appeared at a press conference, saying from the beginning that he had resigned and would not be managing the team in Andorra. Serbia won without him on the bench, while Stojkovic's departure was made official today by the board of the Serbian Federation, which also published a farewell message from him as part of the "amicable contract settlement".
" After four and a half years, I am no longer the coach of the Serbian national "A" team. First of all, I would like to sincerely thank the Football Federation of Serbia for the trust it has shown, it has been a great honor and privilege to lead the national team of my country.
Together, we managed to achieve a historic result and, after 24 years, to tie two major competitions – the World Championship and the European Championship. We managed to achieve the goal I set for myself as a coach.
I will forever remember the scenes from Lisbon, because it is one of the most beautiful moments in my life and one of the greatest successes of Serbian football in recent history.
In the Nations League, we also represented Serbia in the best possible way – we qualified for League A and in competition with very high-quality national teams, we managed to maintain our status in the elite ranks of European football.
I tried to do everything in my power to give a chance to players who could have chosen a different path, to wear the jersey of another national team – but decided to play for Serbia. In the last four and a half years, we have promoted a large number of young footballers who, I am convinced, are the future of Serbian football.
I wish the successors on the national team bench, whoever they may be, much happiness and success. I wish the Football Federation of Serbia and the entire football public to continue to build an atmosphere of unity and support, because this is the only way we can move forward. In me, they will always have an ally, a fan and a man who is honored to be with his Serbia.
"Just as I once proudly carried the national emblem as a player, so today, with the same passion and love, I remain with my country, with our team, our football and our people ," Stojkovic's farewell message read, among other things.
