Flavio Briatore has given an insight into Michael Schumacher's condition, 12 years after the serious skiing accident that changed his life. The 75-year-old has shared emotional memories and tributes to the Formula 1 legend.
Briatore led Benetton when Schumacher won his first two consecutive titles.
The 75-year-old from Italy was close to Shumin, who has not appeared in public since his accident in 2013, and is being cared for by a medical team and his wife, Corina, at their home on Lake Geneva.
In an interview with "Corriere della Sera", Briatore said he continues to speak to the pilot's family and admitted that " the 54-year-old is still forced to stay in bed ".
" If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. I prefer to remember him like that ," said Briatore.
The 75-year-old's statement reinforces what has previously been claimed by sources close to the family. Briatore's ex-wife, Elisabeta Gregoraçi, has previously said that Schumacher " does not speak, but communicates with his eyes ."
While his son, Mick Schumacher, admitted in a Netflix documentary that communication between them changed after the accident.
" I think dad and I will understand each other in a different way now ," the 26-year-old said in 2021.
Despite the challenges, Schumacher's family has shown little sign of public life. In April, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion signed a helmet of F1 icon Sir Jackie Stewart for a charity event - an act described as "emotional" by former teammate Johnny Herbert.
Michael Schumacher remains one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history, with 7 world titles, 155 podiums and 71 fastest laps during a brilliant career.
When asked about the best driver of all time, Briatore mentioned big names like Schumacher, Senna and Alonso, but stressed that today " number one is undoubtedly Max Verstappen ."
