The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, has announced that all female athletes participating in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will undergo genetic testing to verify whether they are biologically female.
In its statement, Coventry emphasized that this policy is based on scientific arguments and recommendations from medical experts, underlining the importance of equality in competition.
"What we have announced are policies based on science and led by medical experts. In the Olympic Games, even the smallest differences can determine the winner, so it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the women's category. In some sports, this may even be unsafe," she said.
The decision comes after a long period of debate over the participation of transgender athletes in international competitions. The move was also welcomed by the White House, which recalled that in February 2025, Donald Trump had signed an executive order aimed at banning transgender athletes from sports for girls and women, foreseeing the termination of federal funding for institutions that allow them to compete.
According to the IOC, the new rules aim to guarantee fair competition and safety for athletes, based on scientific arguments about physical advantages in the sport.
However, the decision has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a necessary step to protect equality in women's sports, while critics warn of the risk of discrimination and exclusion of transgender athletes.
