Pep Guardiola continues to be the most talked-about name for the Italian national team bench, while rumors have circulated in the Italian media that the Spanish coach has requested a salary of 20 million euros per season to accept the job.
However, Paolo Maldini has dismissed these speculations. The Italian national team's technical director, who met with Guardiola in Barcelona last weekend, was asked about this very figure.
" For Pep, the financial aspect is not important in any way ," Maldini said.
With this statement, the former Milan captain implied that the economic issue does not constitute the main obstacle to a possible agreement with the Spanish coach.
Guardiola remains the Italian Federation's main target to take over the Azzurri. If the deal were to go through, he would become the first foreign coach in the history of the Italian national team.
Maldini, in collaboration with his advisor Leonardo, is working to find a successor to the Italy bench as soon as possible. However, Guardiola is not the only candidate who has been contacted.
" Guardiola? We can't give any information about that. You have identified one of our targets, but we have also spoken to Ancelotti, for example. It seemed logical to us to speak to the best in the world to see if they were available to take charge of the Italian national team ," Maldini told Italian media.
A return of Carlo Ancelotti to Italian football seems complicated, as the coach is under contract with Brazil until 2030. On the other hand, Guardiola has stated on several occasions that his priority at the moment is to rest and spend more time with his family, which still makes his future unclear.
