United States President Donald Trump was part of the medal ceremony after the World Cup final, where, according to a lip-reading expert, he repeated the same words to every soccer player who climbed the podium.
The final, held at the MetLife Stadium, was won by Spain, who defeated Argentina 1-0 thanks to a goal by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time. With this success, “La Roja” extended its unbeaten streak to 38 matches, setting the longest streak in international football history.
After the match, Trump attended the medal ceremony along with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The American president greeted all the footballers one by one with a handshake, placed their medals on them and exchanged a few words with each of them, while on several occasions he lightly touched them on the chest as a sign of congratulations.
According to Nicola Hickling, a professional lip-reading expert, Trump used the same message for every player who passed in front of him.
" You are a champion ," was the first phrase the American president addressed to the footballers, immediately adding: " Amazing player ."
