The darkest day of the year is coming, get to know the scientific explanation

The most depressing day of the year is considered the third Monday of January, called "Blue Monday," and this year it is January 20.

It is estimated that Christmas expenses, bad weather, and unfulfilled New Year's resolutions are what make this the most depressing day of the year.

However, scientists say "no, the third Monday in January is not the most depressing day of the year."

How did the term originate?

The term "Blue Monday" was coined in 2004 by British psychologist Cliff Arnall, when the travel agency Sky Travel asked him to develop a mathematical formula to determine the most depressing day of the year.

The travel agency then used the term "Blue Monday" in its advertising campaign, which was designed to encourage summer bookings that the company claimed would alleviate the day's blues.

But Arnal's theory has been completely dismissed by the scientific and academic community. However, there is no credible research evidence to show that "Blue Monday" is more depressing than any other day or that it is the most depressing day of the year.

Public health data such as mortality, disease absence, psychiatric morbidity, and even estimates of deaths or suicide attempts show no increase on the third Monday of January of each year compared to other days of the year.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), around 280 million people worldwide suffer from depression today.
