Diane Keaton's family has revealed that the famous actress passed away as a result of pneumonia, confirming her passing on October 11, at the age of 79. In a statement to People magazine, they expressed deep gratitude for the incredible love and support they have received from the public following her loss.
"The Keaton family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received in recent days on behalf of our beloved Diana," the official statement said.
The family has asked that anyone wishing to honor her memory contribute to causes that Keaton strongly supported: She loved animals and was dedicated to the homeless community. Donations to a local food bank or animal shelter would be a fitting tribute to her.
Diane Keaton remains one of the most distinctive and beloved figures in American cinema. She became internationally known for her role in the film Annie Hall (1977), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She also starred in notable films such as The Godfather, Reds, Marvin's Room, Father of the Bride, Something's Gotta Give and The First Wives Club.
The news of her death shocked Hollywood and the public worldwide. Although she had not been seen in public for a while, there had been no announcement about her health problems. A source told People that her condition had deteriorated unexpectedly in recent months and many of her old friends were unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
Many of her colleagues, including Woody Allen, Jane Fonda, Keanu Reeves, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, have paid tribute and shared precious memories of the actress.
Diane Keaton never married. She is survived by her two younger sisters, Dorrie and Robin, as well as her two adopted children, daughter Dexter (adopted in 1996) and son Duke (adopted in 2001).
