The Miss Universe 2025 pageant, taking place this year in Bangkok, has been engulfed in a major scandal after a public spat between the Thai pageant director, Nawat Itsaragrisil, and Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch. What was expected to be a celebration of beauty and empowerment for women turned into a moment of tension and controversy.
The incident occurred during an awards ceremony, broadcast live on the competition's official Facebook page.
Itsaragrisil asked Bosch about her absence from a sponsor shoot earlier in the day and, when she didn’t immediately respond, called her “stupid” in front of everyone. Bosch refused to be humiliated and maintained her dignity by leaving the ceremony in silence. Moments later, several other contestants, including the current winner Victoria Kjær Theilvig, followed her in solidarity, making the act a symbol of empowerment and respect for women. “Standing up for yourself isn’t always easy,” she wrote on Instagram. “But it’s one of the most important acts of self-respect and strength you can show. Enough is enough, our voices will be heard loud and clear.”
Bosch, speaking to reporters, stressed her respect for Thailand and Miss Universe, but made it clear that personal dignity mattered. “What the director did was disrespectful,” she said. “No one will ever make me feel small again.”
Clips of the moment quickly went viral on TikTok, Instagram and X, creating a wave of support for Bosch with the hashtag #WeStandWithFatima, as fans, former contestants and national directors condemned the director’s behavior. The Miss Universe and Miss Universe México organizations responded immediately, reaffirming their commitment to respect, safety and cooperation, and sending a high-level delegation to Thailand to ensure a professional environment for all participants.
As a result of the incident, Itsaragrisil's participation in this year's events has been limited or banned altogether. He later apologized via a TikTok and Instagram broadcast, acknowledging that there may have been misunderstandings regarding communication expectations.
