US increases pressure on political class as country heads to elections again
The United States of America has given an ultimatum to the political class in Kosovo to stop the games. Kosovo will go to the elections due to political whims, but according to Washington this will have to end.
In a statement to Radio Free Europe, a spokesperson for the US State Department stressed that the current situation is directly damaging citizens' trust in institutions. " We are closely following developments. We would like to see all political groups cooperate in the best interests of the people of Kosovo ," he said, in a statement interpreted as a clear warning to the political leadership in Pristina.
Parliamentary elections are set for June 7, after the Assembly was automatically dissolved due to its failure to elect a president within the constitutional deadline.
Political clashes have been fierce. The Vetëvendosje movement accuses the opposition of deliberately boycotting the sessions, while opposition parties blame the government for a lack of cooperation and attempts to concentrate power. This conflict has led to a recurring institutional stalemate.
The last legislature, resulting from the December 28 elections, lasted less than three months, deepening the perception of political instability. The crisis actually has earlier roots, dating back to the February 2025 elections, when institutions failed to function normally for months.
Kosovo risks entering a dangerous cycle of instability, similar to that of Bulgaria, which has held several elections in a row without managing to create institutional stability. Such a scenario would affect not only decision-making, but also the country's economy, increasing costs for the state budget.
Meanwhile, the Central Election Commission has initiated procedures for organizing the new electoral process. The deadlines for registering parties, coalitions and candidates have opened, while the campaign is expected to last only 10 days, from May 28 until voting day.
The June 7 elections are expected to cost over 10.8 million euros, a significant financial burden for a country facing an ongoing political crisis. In the last elections, turnout was around 45%, while over 2 million citizens were eligible to vote.
