Congressman Joe Wilson, who is calling for this investigation into the Rama government, is not a peripheral name in American politics. He is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Armed Services Committee in the House of Representatives, co-chair of the Albania-US Friendship Group, and for years has been one of Kosovo's strongest supporters in Congress.
New troubles for Prime Minister Edi Rama. This time, bad news for the head of the Albanian government comes again from America.
While the Rama government has been under pressure for a month due to protests demanding the prime minister's resignation, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has filed an amendment in the US Congress that calls for the launch of an investigation by US institutions into the scale of drug trafficking in Albania and the role that, according to the proposal, the Albanian government may have had in facilitating or enabling it.
The amendment was introduced about two weeks ago and, according to US parliamentary procedures, has already passed the Rules Committee and the Law Committee. The next step is consideration and voting in the plenary session of Congress.

The text of the amendment requires the State Department, in cooperation with the Director of National Intelligence, to draft a classified report for Congress.
"Not later than 180 days from the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of State, in coordination with the Director of National Intelligence, shall submit to the appropriate committees of Congress a classified report, prepared in accordance with the protection of intelligence sources and methods, which examines the extent of drug trafficking in Albania and the role of the Government of Albania in facilitating or enabling such drug trafficking," the amendment states.
According to the proposal, the report must be submitted within 180 days of the law's entry into force, if the amendment is approved by the US Congress.
Joe Wilson is not a peripheral name in American politics. He is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Armed Services Committee in the House of Representatives, co-chair of the Albania-US Friendship Caucus, and for years one of Kosovo's strongest supporters in Congress.
Together with Congressman Robert Aderholt, he is co-chair of the Albania-USA Friendship Group in the US Congress, a structure that deals with strengthening relations between the two countries.
Wilson is also part of the leadership of the National Prayer Breakfast in the United States and is known as one of the most active supporters of Kosovo's membership in NATO.
In American political circles, he is considered one of the Republican congressmen closest to President Donald Trump and has consistently held positions on foreign policy and security issues, including developments in the Balkans.
If the amendment is approved in the plenary session of Congress, the American institutions mentioned in its text will have the legal obligation to prepare the required report and submit it to the relevant Congressional committees within the specified deadline.
