Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted after the publication of the international environmental performance report, Environmental Performance Index 2026, which ranks Albania first in the Balkans and 46th in the world for nature protection.
Rama said that for weeks the impression was created that Albania had become “the enemy of its own nature”, while according to him the facts show another reality. However, according to him, the increase in citizens’ interest in issues such as the protection of flamingos and biodiversity is an indicator of the change in Albanian society and constitutes a “victory of civilization”. He emphasized in the end that he has received the message from this protest and that their concerns will soon be addressed.
"For climate change mitigation, Albania ranks 21st in the world. Albania was the land of barbaric deforestation and extermination hunting and rivers turned into waste dumps and a country that had no culture to protect nature. While today it is completely different, we have reached the point where we have major protests for the environment and in itself it is a great achievement of society. The presence of so many people who are concerned about flamingos, about biodiversity shows that Albanian society has also changed and is a victory of civilization. The promised reflection on what the Flamingo Boulevard mirror put before us is not only necessary but indispensable and you will soon have it", he said.
