The "New Albania" platform, presented by the Speaker of the Parliament Elisa Spiropali, is not a movement coordinated with Prime Minister Edi Rama. This was stated by analyst and security expert Ilir Kulla, who said that Spiropali's initiative is personal, but so far has not managed to create real influence within the Socialist Party.
Invited to the podcast "Të Pashoj", Kulla said that, although Spiropali is a powerful figure in the Socialist Party, he still does not seem to have the necessary support to change the balance in the party.
" No, I don't believe she is in agreement with Rama. Elisa has been Speaker of the Parliament, minister, MP and important leader in the Socialist Party. She is a person very invested in the PS, but not invested by Rama. She knows very well how much influence her proposal can have on the Socialists. If she were to leave the Socialist Party today and create a new party, I don't believe it would have any influence. Change would only come if she managed to influence the Socialists within the party and create an internal movement ," said Kulla.
The analyst said that so far he has not seen signs of such an organization, although, according to him, dissatisfaction exists.
" I haven't seen any concrete impact. I can say that something is boiling within the Socialist Party, but I don't see anyone who has the courage to stand up and confront the prime minister. That's the main problem. Dissatisfaction may exist, but without political courage it doesn't produce any change ," he said.
To explain the relationship between Edi Rama and Socialist Party figures, Kulla also brought up an episode from a meeting with former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema in 2019.
" When I was in Rome with Massimo D'Alema, he asked me how the situation in Albania was going. I told him that Rama had brought in new ministers and that one of them had publicly declared that 'Rama is the Skanderbeg of the Albanians'. D'Alema laughed and asked me: 'What does Rama say?' I told him that the problem is that Rama likes this. He immediately answered me: 'Then this is a big problem' ", declared Kulla.
According to him, many socialists privately share criticisms of the way the party is run, but are unwilling to express them publicly.
" I often talk to socialists, to grassroots people, to former leaders and MPs. Many of them tell me that I am right in the criticisms I make, but the problem is that they do not have the courage to confront the leader. In fact, it would be in their interest to do so, for the Socialist Party to initiate reforms and changes before it was too late. Today, a part of them is waiting for Rama to fall to take his place, while another part simply does not dare to speak ," he said.
Finally, Kulla said that a new group of people has been created in the Socialist Party who, according to him, have no connection to the political tradition of this force.
" Then there is another group, the arrivals of recent years, who see the Socialist Party only as a cow to milk and power as an opportunity for profit. This is one of the biggest challenges that the Socialist Party faces today ," concluded Kulla.
