The right-wing councilor for the Municipality of Tirana, Ilir Alimehmeti, has explained the reasons why the opposition insisted that Erion Veliaj be present at the meeting where he was voted to dismiss him as mayor.
According to him, Veliaj should have been heard about all the scandals involving the abuse of public funds that occurred during his time as mayor of the capital.
"We were there to listen to him. Here's why. Because he never answered our questions. Where did the city funds go, where did the incinerator that doesn't exist at all go, where did '5D' go? We have a duty to hold him accountable and ask questions. If he won't answer and he had the last chance to answer before the City Council. Should the possibility of him being there be considered? I think so. Then it could be decided not to, because the Ministry of Justice and the Prisons Directorate know the detention laws. I definitely think that some people, SP advisors and the prime minister were not interested in hearing what he was going to say. In my opinion, he would say: 'Long live the party and long live Edi Rama'", Alimehmeti said on A2 CNN.
Alimehmeti further emphasized that it was this City Council that entrusted the management of 2 billion euros to Veliaj, so citizens should learn through the opposition's questions where the mayor took this money from public funds.
"For the abuses he has committed, for these he should have been punished, not for minor issues like lipstick and dresses. We should be asking big questions. You had over two billion euros to manage from our finances for Tirana, what great work did you leave behind? Was the municipal council there? Who gave him the money, did he take it himself? No, the municipal council gave it to him by vote. It was given to Romina Kuko first and Megi Fino later as mayor and then the entire SP, PSD and PDIU who raise the cards with them," declared Alimehmeti.
