Rama and Frederiksen take stock of the European Political Community Summit in Tirana...
After several hours of discussions and speeches by European leaders, the European Political Community Summit in Tirana has concluded. The press conference was held by Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen, the country that will host the upcoming summit.
Rama described the summit as a fruitful day, but in his characteristic style he did not forget to also take on the role of "global leader", giving advice on how Europe should behave towards the war in Ukraine.
He stressed that Europe must invest more in defense, but without losing sight of the ideal for which the European Union was founded: peace.
" Europe must do more for its defense. But this is only one side of the coin. The other side is related to the very identity of Europe. The EU is the product of the dream of peace; yesterday's enemies have become strategic allies. Therefore, we must fulfill our duties to defend the territory. There is a big question mark: why did Trump have to come to take the initiative of the ceasefire and peace? Maybe because we were very focused and very passionate about a very just and right cause, but we lost ground when it comes to diplomacy. My word is for the ideal Europe, which we must not lose sight of. Because if we lose sight of it, we lose something that makes our territories less valuable to defend. This is my opinion and there is no contradiction. We are socialists and this is my point of view ," said Rama.
The Albanian head of government also announced the creation of a CPE "coordination team", which will be under the auspices of the President of the European Council - a step towards more organized coordination among participating countries.
" We discussed strengthening cooperation, defending the values and principles that embody our societies, investing more in European initiatives, even in those countries that are not part of the EU – and which, as Rama said, 'will never happen'. The round tables, the topics and the conclusions will be followed up further by the Danish side. This was the essence of what was achieved today ," he concluded.
For her part, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that the biggest threat to Europe is Russia, while at the next summit the priority will be European security and rearmament.
“ It has been a warm welcome. Europe is facing major challenges and security will be the main issue. Russia is a real threat, especially through cyber attacks aimed at undermining our democracy. We need to push for more sanctions against it. We are a big market and we need to protect our competitiveness, including low-cost energy and the green transition ,” Frederiksen said.
At the end of the conference, Rama was asked by journalists about the results of the May 11 elections and answered briefly: "The result is 100% the will of the Albanian people." /Pamphlet
