One of Italy's most famous photographers, Fate Velaj, passes away:

Gianni Berengo Gardin, one of Italy's most famous photographers whose black-and-white images chronicled social and cultural change, has died at the age of 94.

Berengo Gardin was born in Santa Margherita Ligure on October 10, 1930, but considered himself Venetian.

"My father is a Venetian from St. Mark's Square, my wife is a Venetian, my children are Venetian. Even though I wasn't born there, I've always considered myself an adopted Venetian," he once said.

He was known for his documentary approach and iconic portraits of post-war Italy, capturing everyday life from the Venetian lagoon to the industrial landscapes of Milan.

During a career that spanned more than 60 years, Berengo Gardin published over 250 books and his work was featured in dozens of exhibitions in Italy and abroad.

Often compared to Henri Cartier-Bresson, Berengo Gardin was praised for his vision and dedication to photography as a tool for social commentary.

Meanwhile, Fate Velaj, the Albanian ambassador to Vienna, has also reacted with a post on social media.

In 2022, I dedicated myself to the creativity of Gianni Beregno Gardin, or, as they called him, "il ragazzo con la Leica".

I analyzed his photographs, studied his perspective to see where I stand with my photographs, his life and thoughts. The meeting that changed his life, the one with Henri Cartier-Bresson... and many more.

In many photos I said beautiful, beautiful...beautiful but one day, when he was telling about his meeting with Bresson and he was showing him the photos and he heard him say "bello, bello...bello" he had told him "if you call me 'beautiful' anymore you will never enter this studio again. A work of art should not be beautiful but good, be well-executed within parameters, not beautiful..."

From that moment on, I no longer say 'beautiful'.

But today, I read that two days ago, "il ragazzo con la Leica" left to never return to us.
