The Supreme Court has upheld the 14-year prison sentence handed down to Arbër Çekaj, who was found guilty of trafficking 613 kg of cocaine that was seized in 2018 at the Port of Durrës. The narcotics were found in a container of bananas that came from Latin America and were destined for the company “Arbi Garden”, owned by Çekaj.

The Supreme Court has also imposed sentences on his two accomplices. Donaldo Lushaj has been sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison, while Armando Pezaku will serve 8 years and 8 months in prison.

The drugs were seized on February 28, 2018 at the Port of Durres and constitute the largest quantity of cocaine ever seized in the country. The quantity was divided into 528 different packages, each with distinctive markings.

According to the Prosecution, Arbër Çekaj turns out to be the organizer of the entire drug trafficking operation, including ordering, dispatching, transporting and arriving at Albania.

Arben Çekaj was sentenced to 21 years in prison, but received a reduced sentence and will serve 14 years in prison. Çekaj was convicted as part of a cocaine trafficking gang after 613 kg of cocaine was seized on February 27, 2018, which he had hidden in the floor of a banana container. In August, he attempted to escape from prison 313 together with Fatmir Pjetri, but his attempt failed.
