An Albanian is among those arrested in a wide-ranging operation against criminal groups involved in drug trafficking, particularly the 'Ndrangheta.
Operation "Anemone", coordinated by Europol, hit an organization led by 57-year-old Rosario Marando, originally from Platì, and several members of his family.
Investigations have revealed that cocaine trafficking routes from South America to the Spanish ports of Rotterdam and Gioia Tauro have been reactivated. Alliances with Albanian groups have also been confirmed.
Since the early hours of this morning, the ROS, with the executive support of the provincial commands of the Carabinieri of Rome, Pistoia, Latina, Teramo, Reggio Calabria and the "hunters" of the Calabrian helicopter squadron, has executed precautionary security measures "arrest in prison" issued by the Court of Rome, at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office - Anti-Mafia Directorate of the District of Rome, against 28 people, investigated for various charges of association with the aim of international drug trafficking, aggravated by mafia methods, as well as the crimes of torture and possession of weapons.
The investigations of Operation "Anemone", led by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office, have uncovered the operations of an 'Ndrangheta-based association dedicated to drug trafficking and operating in the capital, headed by a 57-year-old from Calabria, now definitively convicted of membership in the 'Ndrangheta.
During the operation, large quantities of drugs destined for the Rome market were seized. The boss, according to investigators, is in charge of the Volpiano bar, in the province of Turin, linked to the Platì clan, in the Reggio Calabria area.
In Rome for 25 years, Rosario Marando, now definitively convicted as part of the 'Ndrangheta, allegedly took control of the San Basilio area together with three sons and associates of Albanian gangs specialized in recovering drugs from Dutch and Spanish ports for transporting drugs to Rome.
Calabrian brokers were involved in the purchase of large cargoes in South America arriving in Spain and Rotterdam, as well as in Gioia Tauro.
The investigation, which ended with the issuance of 28 preliminary detention orders, 6 preventive interrogations, the arrest in flagrante delicto of 11 individuals, as well as abroad of the 5 fugitives mentioned above and the seizure of large quantities of narcotics (mainly cocaine and hashish), which were trafficked and distributed by the 'Ndrangheta, and the now structural alliance between it and Albanian criminal organizations. The latter operate in many European countries and beyond, guaranteeing alternative supply channels and, above all, the possibility of using foreign ports, where they exercise their control, to diversify drug routes; the Port of Gioia Tauro is the hub for cocaine imports.
A 46-year-old Albanian was responsible for distributing the drugs in Rome, while contacts between associates were protected by anti-eavesdropping systems with encrypted telephone programs. Five suspects were arrested in Spain with the cooperation of local police.
Among those arrested is 37-year-old Albanian Riza Muco, involved in the trial held in Latina along with Fondi's co-defendants Vincenzo Zizzo and Pasquale Spirito.
The trial has become known after Zizzo is accused of ordering an arson attack on the mayor of Lenola, Fernando Magnafico, and accuses Spirito and Riza Muco of drug trafficking.
In particular, the Albanian is accused of having supplied two co-defendants with 10 kilograms of drugs, ready for sale.
As part of Operation "Anemone", carried out today by the ROS Carabinieri, the preliminary investigation judge of the Rome Tribunal, Antonella Minunni, has ordered the prison sentence for Riza Muco, accusing him of being part of the 'Ndrangheta-type organization led by Marando, as he "was involved in collaboration in the importation and distribution of narcotics such as cocaine, hashish and marijuana".
Also under investigation in Operation "Anemone" is Daniele Buda, a man from Messina and resident of Latina, whose arrest request was rejected because the man, born in 1980, died in 2023.
