Cultivating cannabis worth 1.4 million euros, two Albanians face court

Two Albanians are facing court in Northern Ireland after they were caught in a pub in Strabane.

These are citizens Dorjan Ago, 28 years old, and Oktavian Shkombi, 24 years old, who appeared before the Strabane Magistrate's Court charged with drug-related offenses.

The two men, who are believed to be from Albania, are charged with cultivating cannabis, unlawful possession of a class B drug and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

BBC NI reports that a PSNI detective told the court that the estimated value of the cannabis seized at the property on Knockroe Road was £1.2 million (€1.39 million).

During a brief hearing, both men admitted they could understand the charges and that they were helping to grow the plants.

However, they added that they "knew nothing else."

The court was told the men were arrested on Wednesday following a search of a property.

The police officer said the property was searched after receiving information that a cannabis 'farm' with more than 500 plants was located there.

A separate container was also searched and contained 105 kilograms of herbal cannabis in vacuum-packed bags.

The court was told that both defendants were arrested at the location where the cannabis was being grown.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear again on July 31.

Yesterday, police reported that the operation was led by detectives from the Organised Crime Branch, who are investigating suspected drugs criminality linked to the INLA.
