Tomatoes have been "red gold" for Albanian traders. According to customs data, during the months of March and April, 1 kg of tomatoes in Italy, Turkey and Greece was purchased by our traders for 60 lek, while this product was sold to consumers for 500%-900% more expensive.
According to customs data, in 37 days, 1.5 million kg of tomatoes were imported into our country, with a value of around 93 million lek.
Data provided by Top Channel shows that the highest value was on March 23, when 14,450 kg of tomatoes from Turkey were purchased for 899,516 lek. If we do a simple calculation, the price of tomatoes purchased in this case is 62 lek. But on the other hand, this product has cost consumers 350-600 lek per kg.
The high demand for foreign tomatoes came after the floods, where hundreds of hectares of vegetable greenhouses rotted as a result of the rains. The dependence on imports for Albanians dictated abusive prices that were not controlled and not stopped by anyone.
The trend of high prices was then followed by the little domestic production that went on sale.
But tomatoes are not the only expensive product, as peppers are also at the same price. Meanwhile, the price of legumes is even higher; 1 kg of beans is costing Albanian families 550-600 lekë, with the claim that this product is not cultivated much in our lands.
The high price table for vegetables has been acknowledged by the Ministry of Economy, Delina Ibrahimaj, but has not yet been investigated, only monitored. The monitoring did not stop the abuse of greedy traders./ TCH
