In 2024, the Bank of Albania revoked 24 licenses of foreign exchange agencies. This market is a high-risk sector for money laundering, and as a result, the Central Bank has increased the number of controls.
Inspections have also been carried out by the General Directorate for the Prevention of Money Laundering, which has fined several entities.
On the other hand, there has been no lack of interest in investing in businesses that sell and buy money, as with the granting of 22 new licenses, the number of foreign exchange points has reached 642.
The EX-CHANGE business in Albania is becoming profitable, due to the high currency circulating from the increased presence of tourists and the growing use of the euro as a currency with which it can be freely bought and sold in the market.
Data shows that last year alone, around 12 billion euros were exchanged, an amount that exceeded previous years, when 5 to 7 billion euros were exchanged.
