"Coconut Cartel" leader killed in attack in middle of restaurants

Vietnamese authorities have released photos of two Australian citizens they want to question following the murder of a prominent underworld figure in Sydney.

Lorenzo Lemalu, 24, identified as one of the leaders of the Coconut Cartel criminal group and a former associate of the Alameddine crime family, was shot dead on Thursday night outside a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City.

Security camera footage shows Lemalu's final moments as he stood with several people in an area packed with restaurants, before a hooded gunman shot him at close range in front of shocked customers.

Sam Sauni, 27, another member linked to the Coconut Cartel, originally from Sydney's southwest, was also seriously injured in the attack. Australian media reports that he survived, but his condition is unknown.

Vietnamese police have launched an investigation and have released photos of Lang Kenny Trong Minh Do, 36, and Justin John White, 39, whom they want to interview in connection with the incident.

According to authorities, the two Australians left Ho Chi Minh City by taxi and then got off near a supermarket in Tay Ninh, a city near the Cambodian border. Their current whereabouts remain unknown.

Police have described them as "particularly dangerous" and have urged citizens not to approach them, but to report any information on their movements. Authorities emphasize that no charges have been filed against them and that they are currently wanted only for questioning.

Footage posted on social media shows the injured Lemalu running into a nearby restaurant, where he then collapsed. As customers tried to leave, another injured man is seen crawling towards the sidewalk before passersby brought him inside the restaurant for help.

Another person is seen near Lemalu's bloodied body trying to administer first aid as restaurant staff contacted emergency services. Later photos show medical teams attempting to revive him.

Lemalu was previously part of the Proper 60, a gang from Sydney's west linked to the Alameddine family and led by Ali Younes, known as "Ay Huncho." He had the group's name tattooed on his stomach.

According to reports, Lemalu had broken away from the Alameddine network after leaving Australia four years ago and had begun directing the activities of the "Coconut Cartel" from Southeast Asia.

The Coconut Cartel is considered a splinter group from the Alameddine network and has long been involved in conflict over control of drug trafficking in Sydney.

Photos published on social media in recent months showed Lemalu in Dubai and then in Albania last month.

Messages obtained by the SCN Worldstar platform, allegedly sent by individuals associated with the Alameddine network, suggest that they claimed responsibility for the execution.

"This is what happens when 'Coconuts' try to fight the people who created them," one of the messages read.

However, not everyone believes the murder is directly linked to Sydney gang warfare. According to underworld sources cited by the Daily Telegraph, there is a suspicion that Lemalu may have had conflicts with Albanian criminal groups.

The incident has raised fears of further escalation of clashes between Australian gangs.

Just two days ago, Alai Ahio, 28, a former collaborator of Australian rap group OneFour, was killed in an armed attack in Sydney's southwest.

Australian police said Ahio was at a flat in Canley Heights with four other people when at least two attackers armed with guns and knives entered the property. He was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Four other people were injured, while the perpetrators fled in a white SUV and continue to be on the run.
