A statement by Donald Trump on Cuba's Independence Day has become a strong geopolitical message, with harsh tones towards the regime in Havana and direct warnings to all opponents of the US in the Western Hemisphere.
In a text that goes far beyond a ceremonial message, the US president presents Cuba as a "pariah state" that threatens the national security of the United States and promises economic and political strikes against the communist regime.
The statement comes just months after the US military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a development that Trump is using as a direct warning to socialist allies Caracas and Havana.
" This is our hemisphere and whoever destabilizes the United States will face consequences ," Trump declares, openly restoring the logic of the Monroe Doctrine, the historic American policy that considers Latin America an exclusive zone of influence for Washington.
The American president accuses the Cuban regime of systematic oppression, lack of free elections, repression of political opponents and destruction of the country's economy.
" The communist regime has destroyed all hope for prosperity and denied human dignity ," the statement says, where Trump also attacks the Cuban elite, which he calls "kleptocratic."
He warns that his administration will continue to "cut off financial lifelines" for Central and South American regimes that, according to him, fund criminal and terrorist operations against the US.
Trump also recalls the American operation against Nicolas Maduro, describing it as "one of the most daring special operations of recent generations."
" The United States will not tolerate a rogue state that harbors foreign military operations, intelligence services, and terrorist activities just 90 miles from American soil ," the US president declared.
At the end of his message, Trump expresses support for the Cuban people and the Cuban-American community in the US, while promising that America "will not stop until Cuba regains its freedom."
