A horrific case has been uncovered in France, where Nantes prosecutors have prosecuted an 82-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman who held a 45-year-old woman captive for five years. The victim, described as "mentally fragile", is being treated for hypothermia, while her living conditions are shocking.
According to prosecutor Antoine Leroy, the woman was forced to live in the garden or garage of the defendants' home in the small community of Saint-Molf, near Nantes. The 45-year-old slept on a chaise longue, defecated in a plastic container or bag and was fed porridge mixed with dishwashing detergent. The garage door, police discovered, was blocked from the outside with large stones so that she could not escape.
The woman managed to escape on October 14, taking advantage of a moment when the elderly man was watching television. Half-naked, she ran to the neighbors' house, knocked on their window and said that they had kept her locked up for about five years. Authorities who arrived at the scene found evidence that confirmed her story.
The 82-year-old is under judicial supervision, while the woman he lived with has been remanded in custody. Both defendants are said to have admitted to some of their actions, but have tried to downplay the significance of the events.
The prosecutor's office announced that the couple face charges of "restraining a person by means of torture or cruel treatment," a crime punishable by life imprisonment. They were also charged with fraud and exploitation of a "vulnerable person" after allegedly using the 45-year-old's bank accounts to transfer significant sums of money to themselves.
