OpenAI has announced that about 0.07% of active ChatGPT users in a given week have shown possible signs of mania, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts.
The company emphasizes that these cases are "extremely rare," but acknowledges that in a user base of 800 million people per week, the percentage represents a significant number of people.
According to OpenAI, about 0.15% of users have had conversations that include "clear indicators of possible suicidal planning or intent."
To address these cases, the company has created a global network of over 170 mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and primary care physicians from 60 countries.
These experts have helped draft ChatGPT's support responses, which aim to encourage users to seek professional help.
Some mental health professionals have raised concerns over the figures.
“While 0.07% sounds small, at a population level of hundreds of millions of users, it could involve a lot of people ,” said Dr. Jason Nagata, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He added that while AI could help access psychological support, the limitations and risks remain significant.
